This one day tour visits the Sustainable Minerals Institute – SMI, in St Lucia. SMI has embarked on the task of working with the industry to understand and implement the principles of sustainable development. Over the last six years, SMI has steadily built expertise related to sustainable development and it has engaged widely with the industry on a very diverse range of challenges with a sustainability focus.

The tour will then visit the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) in Indooroopilly. The JKMRC is a world-renowned leader in mineral processing science and technology. For over 45 years it has delivered innovative solutions to the Minerals Industry across a range of commodities.

The tour will finish by visiting CSIRO’s Queensland Centre for Advanced Technologies (QCAT) at Pinjarra Hills. QCAT provides a synergistic environment for ground breaking research, innovation and technology development between research providers, government institutions and industry.

This tour departs immediately after the closing ceremony of IMPC 2010, staying overnight in Adelaide before splitting into two groups for visits to the BHP Billiton Olympic Dam site or the OZ Minerals Prominent Hill mine. The activities end with a tour on Saturday morning of the Ian Wark Research Institute.

Located 560 kilometres north of Adelaide, South Australia, Olympic Dam is a multi-mineral ore body. It is the world’s fourth largest remaining copper deposit, fifth largest gold deposit and the largest uranium deposit. It also contains significant quantities of silver.

OZ Minerals Limited owns 100 per cent of the Prominent Hill copper-gold project located in South Australia. Commissioning of the new copper-gold mine occurred in February 2009 with first sales of Prominent Hill concentrate occuring in April 2009. Located 650 kilometres north west of Adelaide, 130 kilometres north west of BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam operation and 130 kilometres south east of the town of Coober Pedy in the Gawler Craton of South Australia. Processing methods include conventional crushing, grinding and flotation.
